Metal + nonmetal that's ionic bonding as in Na Cl, covalent bonding occurs between nonmetals as in hydrocarbons. The distinction comes from properties in solution. Ionic solids are non conductors but give conducting solutions. My advice, don't try to understand this, just memorize and move on.
