Could we ever hate Steven Spielberg as we do Mel Gibson?

The same goes for Tom Hanks and Betty White. We used to love Mel until he said those bad things and then the divorce, now we hate him. What if Spielberg, White, or even Hanks said bad stuff, did bad things, divorce, etc...would we hate them as much as we hate Mel now?
